Honoring Our Veterans

With 2020 being a different type of year for us all and being unable to have our annual Veteran’s Day celebration, we decided to do things a little differently to continue to show our gratitude for our amazing veterans. Instead of honoring just one of our veterans in our family of clients, we decided to honor a handful instead; on the plus side, this allowed us to honor those both near and far.

Flags were flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of each of the following courageous veterans and we would like to publicly thank each of them for their bravery. No matter if they enlisted on their own or were drafted, we owe each and every one of them our continued gratitude for putting their lives on the line for our freedom.

Neill Perrine is pictured below with his flag. He served in the Air National Guards and worked in the Communications Department.

We are grateful for your service, Neill! Thank you!

Duane Coon served in the Naval Reserves for about two years during high school. Shortly after graduation, he signed up for active duty. He served at the Great Lakes Training Facility for several months and was given a medical discharge. He was disappointed to have his service time shortened but is proud to be a veteran.

You may have had your service time shortened, but we are forever thankful for your willingness to protect us, Duane.

Chuck Pahl served in the Air Force from November of 1969 until July of 1973 . While achieving the rank of sergeant, he was busy traveling throughout Asia and South East Asia. Being schooled and trained as a structural repair specialist on aircraft, work was abundant due to the Vietnam War. He had stays in Taiwan, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. Chuck was adamant that are numerous grand stories of those days but he would be remiss to indulge when the focus to him is on all those true HEROES who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

We are truly grateful for your service, Chuck, in addition to those who gave all. Honoring your bravery is the least we could do for your willingness to protect our nation.

Don Davis (pictured below) served in the Army from March of 1970 until 1971. He completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was assigned to the 1st Army Headquarters at Fort Meade, Maryland. There he attained the rank of SP4. Don shared a funny story with us about his time in the service: “On our first overnight march and bivouac, we carried our full backpacks containing our camping gear and personal hygiene products. During the march unknown to me the cap had come off of my shaving cream can. In the process of setting up my tent, I opened my backpack to discover that the entire contents of the shaving cream can had filled the inside of my backpack. What a mess!”

We salute you for your service, Don! We thank you for sharing your experiences, too.

Bob Ecker (pictured below) is an Army veteran that served in 1972 and was enlisted for training in radar repair. Bob shared a funny story with us: “I was stationed at an anti-personnel radar site just outside of Danang, Viet Nam. It was on a small hill with a lot of flat ground for miles around. We only used the radar at night so we had some time on our hands during the day. On July 4th, we noticed a firefight going on quite a ways away with red tracers going in one direction and green tracers going in the other direction. We sat and watched this go on for a while. Then the tracers started coming in our direction. Our first thought was to run for cover even though we knew they were too far away to reach us. All 6 or 8 of us jumped down from the small wall that we were sitting on and tried to go thru the barrack’s door all at the same time. When we stopped laughing, we went in to put on our flack jackets and helmets. Then we went back out to watch the rest of the show.”

Bob Ecker

Bob – Thank you for serving the country with courage and sharing your story with us.

Veteran’s Day is a good time to remember that our freedom isn’t guaranteed. It’s protected by the men and women in our Armed Services. To those who have served to help secure our way of life, we thank you! This Veteran’s Day and every day, nothing but huge respect for you all.

It’s great to see your organization honor these vets. I didn’t serve and sometimes feel like I really missed something in my life. I respect and appreciate what our veterans have done for us and our country. Thank you all.
